Indoor Attractions (for rainy days)

There’s a good chance it will rain on your holiday in the Lake District, but despite the weather there are tons of indoor activities and attractions. There’s cinemas and theatres dotted around the area and check below for a wealth of ideas.
The World of Beatrix Potter – Bowness-on-Windermere. If you’re a fan of Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, or any of Beatrix Potter’s wonderful characters, you’re in for a treat! Nestled in the charming town of Bowness-on-Windermere, this magical attraction brings her timeless tales to life. Or if you’re not, you will be after visiting this family friendly exhibition. With displays and interactive exhibits, Peter Rabbit’s garden, Hill Top House, the home of Beatrix Potter is nearby and there’s a cafe and gift shop. In the attached theatre there’s Happy Birthday Peter Rabbit show during July and August.
Lakeland Motor Museum – Backbarrow, Cumbria. This is a fantastic family destination, especially for kids who love cars and history! With over 30,000 exhibits, including classic cars, motorcycles, and even interactive activity trails, there’s plenty to keep young visitors entertained. It’s fully pushchair and wheelchair accessible, and the riverside Café Ambio is perfect for a relaxing break.
The Puzzling Place – Keswick. A fun, interactive attraction of the world of optical illusions. Great fun for all the family with several different themed rooms. Every corner offers a photo-worthy moment, with a unique and memorable experience, making it a hit with families, couples, and groups of friends alike.
The Derwent Pencil Museum – Keswick. A trip to the Lake District must include a visit to this quirky, world famous Pencil Museum. Step through a replica graphite mine entrance and embark on a journey through the fascinating history of pencil-making. The exhibition includes the world’s largest pencil, pencils with hidden maps, unique souvenirs and a cafe.
The Lakes Aquarium – Windermere. A small but interesting aquarium with plenty of fish, local and tropical, otters, reptiles and amphibians. The attached cafe gets a special mention and there’s plenty of parking.
Kong Adventure – Keswick. This is a thrilling indoor and outdoor activity centre that offers fun for the whole family. From the whimsical Krazy Kong climbing walls to the smoke-breathing dragon in the kids’ hard play area. For the adventurous, there’s an indoor caving system and even an ice wall to conquer.
